Dinking, Dishing and Talking about the Achilles Tendon

Barbara Brodowsky Season 1 Episode 8

In this week’s dink and dish podcast we chat about the Achilles tendon, including common injuries, overuse, and how to avoid it all by being prepared to play properly.

Achilles Tendon Ruptures: Causes, Treatment, and Prevention

The Achilles tendon, the strongest tendon in the human body, connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. Despite its strength, it's susceptible to ruptures, especially in athletes and active individuals. A rupture occurs when the tendon is overstretched, leading to a partial or complete tear. This often happens during activities involving sudden starts and stops, like basketball or tennis.

Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Rupture:

  • Sudden, sharp pain in the back of the ankle or calf
  • A popping or snapping sound at the time of injury
  • Difficulty walking, especially pushing off the affected foot
  • Swelling and bruising around the ankle
